In this fascinating exhibition, we learn that blacksmithing before the 16th century was the only way to handle iron. The blacksmith’s craft in the cities in the middle of the 19th century fell into decay, however, the role of the rural “blacksmith” increased. Usually rural blacksmiths were hereditary professionals from local peasants, there were also blacksmiths – gypsies and Jews. Vehicles were made directly in the smithy, or near it. If, however, the basis was made at home, they still turned to the blacksmith for the iron details.
